Sukhothai Adventures

When I arrived in Sukhothai after a rather tiring 6 hour bus ride, I decided that it was time for my daily dose of fried rice and my bed!

The next morning I rented a bile to explore the historical park, which is where you can see the monuments of the ancient capital. The park is very nice and neat-perfect for a bike tour! As you ride along, you'll see the wats and whenever you feel like it, you can hop off your bike and do some further exploring.

You can easily spend a whole day on your bike, which is what I did. If you are a rather ambitious biker, you can see all wats in one day. However I stayed another day in Sukhothai which mostly targeted the training of my taste buds...

In case you are now thinking that I fullfilled my calorie intake for the day you are not quite right - there is always room for some fruit!

But yeah- I guess now it's enough...

Besides eating I drove to New-Sukhothai, the modern part of the city, located 12 kms from the ancient part. It is not really worth a visit if you ask me, but I had to walk off some of the food.

All in all, Sukhothai is great! If you only have time to visit one of Thailands old capitals, I would recommend you to choose Sukhothai, however if you have enough time, both, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya, are worth a visit!!!

The next morning I packed my backpack and headed to Chiang Mai- and what can I say... It is aaaamazing! More to come soon ;)

Ayutthaya Day 2 and 3

On my second day in Ayutthaya I rented a bike and left to explore the rest of the ancient city. Although the traffic on the left side is a bit of a challenge if you are not used to it, I found my bike to be the best way to get around!

I didn't really have a route in mind so I just cycled around randomly, enjoying the sites on the way.

I even met some elephants!

Suddenly I found myself on a highway so I decided that it might be time to turn around and cool off in the pool- a very good idea indeed (37 degrees Celsius and very moist weather!!)

Day three was all about life on the river. I booked a boattour and the disco-tuktuk picked me up at my guesthouse.

Soon after we left, the rain started pouring down- and I am not even kidding when telling you that I got completely soaked. Nevertheless the trip was great, we got off at some wats and being the only brave tourists in the rain, we had them almost to ourselves!

The day ended with a nice ( and veeeery garlicy) meal at the nightmarket.

The next morning, I packed my bags and hopped on a bus to Sukhothai, another ancient Thai capital. Stay tuned for pictures and reports from there :)

Ayutthaya Day 1

Today I decided to escape Bangkok and continue my travels towards the north of Thailand.

I took a train to Ayutthaya (15baht!!!), the old capital of Thailand. The trainride took me about 1.5 hours and was an experience itself! People try to sell their snacks and drinks throughout the journey and there is a seperate place for monks.

I was lucky to find a nice woman who showed me when I needed to get off the train, the signs at the station are only displayed in Thai, so again we have a little language problem there.

When I arrived in Ayutthaya, I instantly liked it much better than Bangkok. It is smaller and finally you can walk to places. This was something I didn't like about Bangkok at all, you can't walk anywhere cause streets are too big and just not build for pedestrians.

I walked about 2km through Ayutthaya to find a guesthouse which was recommended on the internet. On my way, some women asked me if I was fine or if I needed help. I was wondering why they were asking, however when I looked in the next mirror, I knew why! I was all red and looked like I was about to pass out if I walked 2 more metres... Its even hotter here than in Bangkok...

I was lucky that the Promtong Mansion had a free room! The owner is very very kind and explained me how to get to all the wats ( palaces or monasteries).

In the afternoon I set out to explore some of them. The first one was the Wat Maha That.

Home to the famous "buddha in a tree"

The wats in Ayutthaya are mostly ruins, since the Burmese burned them down in 1767. Today, the city is declared as a UNESCO world heritage.

My next stop was the Wat Ratchaburana, a lot smaller but also pretty.

After visiting this wat, the heat just got too much to handle and I went back home to hop into the pool for a much needed refreshment. I enjoyed a nice dinner at the local night-market, just around the corner. I haven't been brave enough to try the crazy dishes, but I'm slowly getting there :)

Bangkok Day 2

Pheeew, my feet feel like I've walked through the whole city of Bangkok in one day.

In the morning I left the hotel to get to Sathorn Pier where I bought a day-ticket for the boats driving on the Chao Phraya. It stops at 13 piers and from there you can easily get to most of the big attractions. My first stop was at the Wat Pho, a temple that is home to a 46 m tall Buddha.

I spend some time there to enjoy the scenery.

Afterwards I hopped back on the boat to get to the Grand Palace. It is amazing!

I visited the famous emerald buddha ( no pics allowed) and all other parts of the palace that are open to the public. If you wantbto visit the Grand Palace, male sure to wear long pants and no tanktops! They really won't let you in, you could rent appropriate clothing but the line is huge. I just brought a big scarf that i converted to a long skirt while visiting the palace.

My next stop was the famous Khao San Road- a backpacker oasis which ows its fame to Leonardo DiCaprio who visited the street in his movie "The beach".

It is a very lively and busy place, perfect for some people-watching ;)

Bangkok Day 1

Yayy, I made it to Thailand! I will stay here for 2 months before I go back to work and explore as many places as possible. I checked in at Munich airport and when I reached Dubai, the woman at the check-in counter already made my day by announcing that I'll receive a free upgrade. Thank you Emirates, it was soooo nice! Definitely the best start to my journey, I mean look at the food

And thats just the appetizer, i had seafood and a super-tasty passion fruit tart on top. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the chocolate. I also enjoyed a proper bed and the latest movies.

When I arrived in Bangkok it was already late so all that was on my agenda was getting to the hotel and falling into bed- which I did!

The next morning I left the hotel to visit the Chatuchak Weekend market. It was crazy, you could really buy anything there- all kinds of living fish, frogs, a crocodile's head, all kinds of food, clothes and jewellry. It is definitely worth a visit!

I left the market using the subway to Sukhumvit road. I strolled around the area before taking the sky-train in an attempt to find the Khao San Road. I failed...

Instead I got lost, it took me hours to find a taxi-driver who spoke English and knew how to find my hotel. After all this, I decided to enjoy a delicious Pad Thai and hop into the pool for some relaxation.
